When we talk of Arabic men, we visualize
them in long, loose full-length robes or tunics that are usually white in colour.
These ankle-length apparel having long sleeves are known as Thobes. The word Thobe refers to “garment”. At times you can
also spell it as thawb. It proves to be a favourite traditional Arab outfit
that offers the Arabian men a unique identity in the Persian Gulf. Thobes are a
very popular outfit throughout the Middle East and an integral part of Islamic Clothing for Men.
Types of thobes
The thobe type is different in each
Gulf Country. The Gulf Countries include United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi
Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. When you visit public places you will notice
men wearing different styles of thobes.

Emirati –These
have long sleeves with tassels that match the embroideries on the shoulder but
no collars. Here, the headpiece is called teachers that are conveniently thrown
over the shoulder.

Qatari – This one
is usually made of some kind of shiny fabric with a shirt pocket or stiff
tassel. In this case, the headpiece is known as Cobra as it is heavily starched
to replicate the look of a venomous snake.

Saudi – Unlike
the other thobes this one is a little tight-fitted having a 2 or 3 buttoned
collar. They feature short sleeves that need cufflinks.

Bahraini – This one
is again loosely-fitted having a soft shirt-type collar similar to that of a
kameez. Some even feature shirt like pockets. Here, the headpiece is known as a
butterfly that has an elegant look. It allows free neck movement, unlike most
other thobes.

Kuwaiti – Here,
it is popularly known as Kuwaiti Kunduras. It is famous for the high-quality
material used to design it having a one-buttoned collar and features a slim
fit. Here, the headpiece is of asymmetrical length and falls over the shoulder.

Omani – This
thobe does not have a collar and is at times colourful.
They are loosely attached just above the chest. Its head wear is known as the
Gotra. It is embroidered depicting personalized patterns and detailing.
