Abaya – From Traditional Fashion to Mainstream

Abaya, traditional Islamic clothing, which is a robe-like dress, worn by women majorly in the Middle East. It is a long loose garment, which has long sleeves, floor-length and traditionally they are black. In Arabian countries, it is a style staple for all Muslim women and worn with other pieces of Islamic clothing such as Hijab, or Tarha.

The history of the abayas begins from the Arabian Peninsula. For Islamic community people, the abaya represents their deep-rooted culture and proud tradition. In the past, the abayas were usually made of silk or wool fabric and worn in a free-flowing style. However, from the last two decades, the designers of Islamic clothing have updated the fabric, which includes cotton, chiffon, linen, and some others.

There are two major styles in Abaya. Firstly, the traditional Abayas are simple, unadorned, and most commonly found in black color. Secondly, the designer and stylish Abayas with solid colors and different varieties.

Nowadays, designers are assimilating and fusing the Abayas into a modern outfit. Although the sleeves and floor-length remains the same, it comes with better ornamentation and colored embellishments on the neckline, sleeve cuffs, front and back. In the Muslim community, the older and younger people wish to demonstrate their respect for their culture and connection to their tradition by wearing the abaya. The old women prefer to wear simple, plain, and black-colored abayas. However, young women prefer to wear embellished and adorned abayas along with designer cuts and patterns. Moreover, there are slight variations in the styles of the Abayas depending upon the geographical region and culture.

The most distinguished plus point of Abaya dress is that there are various styles, patterns, and fabrics in abayas and can easily be paired with other pieces of Islamic clothing. The variety of fabric includes silk abaya, rayon abaya, satin abaya, denim abaya, and a lot more. To look more fashionable and leave a long-lasting impression on others, you can choose from a variety of styles and designs according to your personality and comfortability.

At present, abaya dress is not just modest clothing for Muslim women, but it is one of the most preferred choices because of its comfortability and versatility. While keeping aside the religious beliefs of the garb, the designers are giving it different tailored cuts, higher necklines, and long sleeves.

Denim abayas, specifically are the most called for. Denim is a rugged form of cotton and becomes more trendy among women of the Muslim community. For Islamic women, it is like cream of the crop because abayas are available in many colors and shades of blue. The most prominent one is the indigo denim.

If you are tired and bored of wearing traditional abayas, then you can try denim abayas or even go for abaya dresses. Abaya dresses are also Islamic attire, which gained popularity due to their trendy and modern look. In addition, there are miscellaneous colors and hues available in abaya dresses that attract modern women.

Therefore, the whole fashion sector is fleetly evolving and embracing new styles, trends and designs every day. No doubt, there was an imperative need to imbibe Islamic clothing and fusing it into modern, fashionable, and stylish garb.
